“When I was little my father beat me so badly I almost died. When I got married I hoped my husband would be different but he beats me – and sometimes our children – for no real reason.”

Why is Unveiling Joy an Urgent Call to Action?

Millions of Arabic speaking women and girls experience extreme physical and verbal abuse inside their homes. In some families a father, husband, or brother officially guards and controls the woman her entire life – from birth to death.
Two out of five Arab girls are forced to marry before they turn 18. Countless young girls are raped and then forced to marry their rapists. Others are sold, kidnapped, and trafficked in the global sex trade.
Chronic depression is the highest in the world among people in the Middle East and North Africa. Many women and girls commit suicide, especially when they are trapped inside unsafe relationships.
